On the central eastern border of SC, southeast of Florence; organized Dec 19, 1801 from All Saints Parish. Name Origin: For Gen. Peter Horry (1743-1815), officer in the Revolutionary War and prominent citizen. Referred to by inhabitants as "The Independent Republic of Horry."

Area (sq mi): 1254.96 (land 1133.68; water 121.28). Pop per sq mi: 200.20.
Pop 2005: 226,992. State rank: 6. Pop change: 2000-20005 15.40%; 1990-2000 36.50%. Pop 2000: 196,629 (White 79.90%; Black or African American 15.50%; Hispanic or Latino 2.60%; Asian 0.80%; Other 2.80%). Foreign born: 4.00%. Median age: 38.30.
Income 2000: per capita $19,949; median household $36,470; Pop below poverty level: 12.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,933-$25,266.
