Hosack, David

Hosack, David (1769–1835) physician; born in New York City. He became professor of materia medica at Columbia University (1797–1811) and taught the theory and practice of medicine at New York's College of Physicians and Surgeons (1811–26). He was one of the first physicians to use the stethoscope and to advocate vaccination; he was the first American surgeon to ligate the femoral artery (1808). In 1804, he was attending surgeon at the Aaron Burr-Alexander Hamilton duel. He helped found Bellevue Hospital (1820).
