Hot Standby Routing Protocol

Also found in: Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
(protocol)Hot Standby Routing Protocol - (HSRP) A CISCO standard, defined in RFC 2281, that calls for a mirrored router in passive mode to send hello packets, wait for a lead router to die and, without dropping a packet, take over from that router.

Note: "standby", not "swappable" (and certainly not "swapable").

Two Cisco 3800 Series ISRs configured with Hot Standby Routing Protocol (HSRP) and Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) features, provide business continuity by allowing voice services to continue in the event of a wide area network (WAN) failure.
For high-availability, the MSFC supports Cisco IOS Hot Standby Routing Protocol (HSRP) for routing redundancy between MSFCs in the same chassis, across Catalyst 6000 Family switches, or between a Catalyst 6000 Family switch and a standalone Cisco router.
The Catalyst 6000 family can also load balance across redundant Layer-3 paths and supports Hot Standby Routing Protocol (HSRP), providing fast cutover to a backup system in the event of a catastrophic failure.
