Houghton, Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron (hou`tən, hô`–), 1809–85, English author. Throughout much of his life he was an active member of Parliament. He was among the first to recognize the genius of Keats and in 1848 published his Life, Letters, and Literary Remains of John Keats. In addition he secured a pension for Tennyson and widely proclaimed Swinburne's genius. His poetical works include Poems of Many Years (1838) and Palm Leaves (1844).
