Houma (hō`mə), city (1990 pop. 30,495), seat of Terrebonne parish, SE La.; inc. 1848. Houma is a port on the Intracoastal Waterway. Motor vehicles, oil field equipment and machinery, chemical tanks, and wire rope are produced. There is shipbuilding (including tugboats) and shrimp processing.
