Hovenden, Thomas (1840–95) painter; born in Dummanway, Ireland. He emigrated to America in 1863 and was based in Philadelphia. A deeply sympathetic man, he is known for his genre studies of black Americans, such as Breaking Home Ties (1890). He died trying to save a young girl from an onrushing train.
