Howells, William White 

Born Nov. 27, 1908, in New York. American anthropologist. Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Howells graduated from Harvard University and in 1934 earned the Ph.D. degree there. From 1939 to 1954 he worked at the University of Wisconsion, where he became a professor of anthropology in 1948. From 1954 to 1974 he was a professor of anthropology at Harvard University, where in 1955 he was named director of the Peabody Museum. His chief works deal with the anthropogenesis and anthropology of the populations of the Pacific islands and with the mathematical analysis of the changes in the skull structure between ancient man and modern racial groups.
