an industrial city in E India, in West Bengal on the Hooghly River opposite Calcutta. Pop.: 1 008 704 (2001)

Howrah 

a city and port in eastern India, in the state of West Bengal, on the Hooghly River, an arm of the Ganges. Administratively part of the city of Calcutta. Population, 590,000 (1969). Howrah is the terminus of the Northern Railroad. Industry is represented by food processing, metalworking, and the production of jute, cotton, paper, and glass; the city also has a railroad repair shop. Howrah has a botanical garden.
