Immigrants from the China mainland formed a colony at Hsinchu in the early 1700s. Since the 19th cent. the city has been a thriving commercial center.

Hsinchu has a seaport at Chiukang and a station on the railroad line along Taiwan’s western coast. Ammonia is produced and camphor is processed. Other industry includes the production of glass and sugar and the canning of fruit. Coal and natural gas are extracted in the surrounding region. There is a fishing industry.
