Hsinchu

Hsinchu or Hsin-chu (both: shĭn`j`), city (1995 pop. 340,255), NW Taiwan. The city and surrounding area are noted for the production of tea, rice, oranges, and petroleum. Hsinchu has become an important computer and electronics engineering and manufacturing center. Other major industries include petroleum refining and the manufacture of cement, fertilizers, textiles, and glass. Iron ore, coal, gold, and silver are mined. Immigrants from the China mainland formed a colony at Hsinchu in the early 1700s. Since the 19th cent. the city has been a thriving commercial center.

The entrance to Taiwan's high-tech corridor known as Hsinchu Science Park is deceptively green.
EINDHOVEN, Netherlands & HSINCHU, Taiwan -- NXP, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) today announced they will strengthen their cooperation to include advanced R&D in CMOS process technologies as well as manufacturing partnership.
Based in Hsinchu (the capital of Taiwan's multi-billion dollar semiconductor industry), the training center features senior instructors from ARC International and partner companies who will guide customers and prospects in Greater China on the development of lower cost, highly differentiated chips using ARC's patented configurable products and third party technologies.
