In south-central CO, south of Pueblo; original county, organized Nov 1, 1861 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Huerfano River, Spanish 'orphan,' referring to an isolated butte in the river.

Area (sq mi): 1593.24 (land 1590.87; water 2.38). Pop per sq mi: 4.90.
Pop 2005: 7,771. State rank: 41. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.20%; 1990-2000 30.80%. Pop 2000: 7,862 (White 58.40%; Black or African American 2.70%; Hispanic or Latino 35.10%; Asian 0.40%; Other 15.90%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 41.70.
Income 2000: per capita $15,242; median household $25,775; Pop below poverty level: 18.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $16,733-$18,067.
