Huitotoan Languages

(also Witotoan), the language family of the Huitoto Indians. According to the classification of the Spanish linguist A. Tovar, there are three or four branches: Huitoto proper (the Ocaina, Kaime, Xúra, Séueni, Eraye, and Jayruya languages) and the languages of the Mekka subgroup (Yaboyano, Menekka, Meresiene, Bue, and Fitita); the Airuya language; the Nonuya, or Anyonofa, language; and perhaps the Orejone-Coeruna language group, which some scholars attribute to the Miranya (Miranna) family. Descriptions of most of the Huitotoan languages are very scanty or nonexistent.
