In north-central IA, north of Fort Dodge; established Jan 15, 1851 from Webster County. Name Origin: For Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), German explorer and naturalist.

Pop 2005: 9,973. State rank: 78. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.90%; 1990-2000 -3.50%. Pop 2000: 10,381 (White 98.10%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 1.40%. Median age: 41.30.

On NW coast of CA; organized Mar 12, 1853 from Trinity County, and in 1874 annexed part of Klamath County. Name Origin: For Humboldt Bay, which was named for German naturalist and traveler, [Friedrich Heinrich] Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859).
