Humphreys, Joshua (1751–1838) shipbuilder, naval architect; born in Delaware County, Pa. Congress named him to refit eight merchant vessels as the first Continental naval vessels (1775). He was the first naval constructor (1794–1801); he designed five of the first six United States frigates and he personally supervised the building of the USS United States (launched in 1797).
