Hungry Mother State Park Location: Southwestern Virginia, off I-81. Facilities: 43 campsites (32 with water and electric hookups), 20 cabins, 6-bedroom lodge, showers, toilets, picnic area, 3 picnic shelters, hiking trails, bicycle trails, swimming beach, bathhouse, boat launch, boat rentals, fishing pier, conference center (with meeting rooms, cabins, a swimming pool, sports complex, and picnic area), visitor center, amphitheater, restaurant, snack bar, gift shop, playground. Activities: Camping, boating (electric motors only), fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, interpretive programs. Special Features: Park is named for a legend that a mother and her child, abducted by Native Americans, later escaped and wandered through the wilderness eating berries. The mother collapsed, her child ran for help and when found could only utter the words "hungry mother." The site where her body was found is known as Molly's Knob.
