Huntingdon and Godmanchester, town (1991 pop. 15,451), Cambridgeshire, E central England, traversed by the Ouse River. The son of a gentry family, he entered Cambridge in 1616 but probably left the next year.

 was born in Huntingdon; both he and Samuel Pepys Pepys, Samuel , 1633–1703, English public official, and celebrated diarist, b. London, grad. Magdalene College, Cambridge, 1653. In 1656 he entered the service of a relative, Sir Edward Montagu (later earl of Sandwich), whose secretary he became in 1660.
