Hurd, Peter

Hurd, Peter, 1904–84, American painter, b. Roswell, N.Mex. Hurd left West Point to study art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He worked as apprentice to the painter N. C. Wyeth and married his daughter, the painter Henrietta Wyeth. Hurd is known for his realistic paintings of Western scenes and for his illustrations. He decorated the Big Springs, Tex., post office and the post office annex at Dallas, Tex., with mural paintings. His portrait of President Lyndon Johnson is in the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. Hurd is represented in the major American museums.
