Hurewicz, Witold

Hurewicz, Witold (1904–56) topologist; born in Lodz, Russian Poland. Emigrating to America to teach at the University of North Carolina (1937–1945) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1945–1956), he discovered higher homotopy groups and exact sequences and did major work on fiber spaces. Charming and absentminded, he died after falling off a pyramid in Uxmal, Mexico.
