On the east coast of MI on Saginaw Bay; organized Apr 1, 1840 from Sanilac and Tuscola counties. Name Origin: For the Huron Indians (later known as Wyandots), a tribe of Iroquoian linguistic stock; from a French word for 'rough,' probably because they were formidable opponents.

Area (sq mi): 2136.47 (land 836.52; water 1299.95). Pop per sq mi: 41.40.
Pop 2005: 34,640. State rank: 45. Pop change: 2000-20005 -4.00%; 1990-2000 3.20%. Pop 2000: 36,079 (White 96.80%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 1.60%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.40%). Foreign born: 1.40%. Median age: 41.20.
Income 2000: per capita $17,851; median household $35,315; Pop below poverty level: 10.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,811-$26,175.

In north-central OH, west of Akron; organized Feb 7, 1809 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For the Huron Indians, a tribe of Iroquoian linguistic stock, later known as the Wyandot. Name from a French word for 'rough,' with a derogatory suffix, -on, probably indicating that they were formidable opponents.
