In southeastern SD, southwest of Sioux Falls; created May 8, 1862 (prior to statehood) from unorganized territory. Name Origin: For John S. Hutchinson (1821-?), secretary of the Dakota Territory (1861-65), during which time he was frequently acting governor; member of the Hutchinson family singing and bell-ringing group, famous during the mid-1850's.
