Hwange National Parkformerly Wankie National ParkNational preserve, northwestern Zimbabwe. Located on the Botswana frontier, it was established in 1928 as a game reserve and in 1930 as a national park. The land, with an area of 5,657 sq mi (14,651 sq km), is largely flat, with hardwood forests of mukwa and teak. It is one of Africa's largest elephant sanctuaries; its abundant wildlife can be observed from platforms overlooking the water holes. How to thank TFD for its existence? | Hartebeest, wildebeest and zebra in South Africa's Kruger National Park, Botswana's Okavango Delta and Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park could be severely threatened by a predicted 5-per-cent drop in rainfall. On the parched outskirts of Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe, Mabale villagers were screaming epithets, flailing arms and legs, and beating drums and pots, creating an unearthly din. One day we were flying out of canoe country, heading south to Hwange National Park for more walking safaris and game viewing from cottages built into the trees at Kanondo Tree Camp; another, we were gliding in a seaplane over daunting Victoria Falls (twice the height of Niagara), watching whitewater rafters submerge and pop up amid the roiling rapids and violent spray at the foot of the falls. |
