Hypericaceae
(St.-John’s-Wort family), a family of dicotyledonous plants that includes trees, shrubs, subshrubs, grasses, and woody lianas. The opposite or whorled leaves are whole and do not have stipules. The flowers are bisexual and regular. The sepals and petals are clustered in fours or fives. The numerous stamens are usually grouped by filaments into three to five bundles. The ovary is superior, and the fruit is a capsule or berry. The family consists of approximately eight genera (360 species), which are found in the tropical, subtropical, and temperate zones of both hemi-spheres, but they flourish primarily in the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. The two genera found in the USSR consist of one species of the genus Triadenum (in the Far East) and 50 species of the genus Hypericum. The family Hypericaceae is closely related to the family Guttiferae, and the two families are often considered to be the same. REFERENCETakhtadzhian, A. L. Sistema i filogeniia tsvetkovykh rastenii.
