This may arise when kidney function is impaired due to exhausted cellular energy supply, or due to hypovolaemic shock where blood is shunted to the most vital organs--the heart, brain and lungs--leading to vasoconstriction in the kidneys and impaired function as a consequence.
Hypovolaemic shock results from severe blood loss following trauma and may progress to poor perfusion and eventual damage and subsequent failure of essential organs.
