D’iakonov, Igor’ Mikhailovich 

Born Dec. 30, 1914 (Jan. 12, 1915), in Petrograd. Soviet Orientalist, doctor of historical sciences (1960).

D’iakonov graduated from Leningrad State University in 1938. From 1937 to 1959 he was a senior scientific worker at the Hermitage, and in 1954 he joined the Leningrad Division of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He became a member of the international committee Corpus Inscriptionum Iranicarum in 1954 and an honorary member of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 1962, and he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Economic History Association from 1965 to 1968. His major works are devoted to the social and economic history of the countries of ancient Southwest Asia and to philology (the Semitic, Sumerian, Hurrian, Urartean, and Elamite languages).
