i5

A family of midrange servers from IBM that are based on IBM's POWER CPUs and run under the i5/OS and AIX operating systems. Windows and Linux can also be run in an attached x86-based server (see IXS). The i5 is the successor to IBM's iSeries (AS/400) family. Officially known as the eServer i5, the i5 is IBM's small to medium size business computer line, and more than 20,000 applications have been written for it. Programming is typically done in RPG and COBOL.

A Huge Range of POWER
Using IBM's POWER5 CPUs, i5 models were first introduced in 2004 with a wide range of capacities. Single CPU Express Edition systems started at 500 CPW of commercial system performance with up to 32GB of memory, all the way to the i5 595, a 64-way system rated up to 165,000 CPW and 2TB of memory. As a point of comparison, iSeries models available at the time of the i5 introduction offered from 300 to 37,400 CPW in performance and from 16 to 256GB of memory. See iSeries, i5/OS and AS/400.
