ICQ

("I Seek You") A conferencing program for the Internet from Mirabilis, Tel Aviv, Israel (www.icq.com). It provides interactive chat, e-mail and file transfer and can alert you when someone on your predefined list has also come online. The chat rooms and alerts are managed by the Mirabilis servers. In 1998, Mirabilis and ICQ were acquired by AOL.


(chat)ICQ - 1. Abbreviation for "I seek you".

2. A proprietary chat system created by a couple of israeli guys, who later founded "mirabilis". ICQ was sold to America On-Line around 1998.

The name "ICQ" is a play on "cq", the radio signal for seeking conversation.
