interleukin-1 [‚in·tər¦lük·ən ′wən]
(immunology)
A cytokine produced by macrophages, endothelial cells, lymphocytes, and epidermal cells that plays roles in the inflammatory process and in the immune response. Abbreviated IL-1.

Current therapy targeting IL-1 in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is based on a recombinant form of the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra; anakinra), which binds to the IL-1 receptor without eliciting a signal and therefore competes with the binding of the two natural ligands, namely IL-1a and IL-1U.
