IPv6

(Internet Protocol Version 6) The latest generation of the IP protocol. The specification was completed in 1997 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and first deployed in 2004 when ICANN added IPv6 records to its DNS root servers for Japan and Korea. IPv6 is backward compatible with IPv4 and was designed to fix its shortcomings, such as data security and maximum number of user addresses.

Virtually Unlimited Devices
IPv6 increases the address space from 32 to 128 bits, providing for all practical purposes an unlimited number of unique addresses for connection to the Internet (see Internet of Things and binary values). It also supports quality of service (QoS) parameters for real-time audio and video. Originally called "IP Next Generation" (IPng), IPv6 and IPv4 exist side-by-side.

What Happened to IP Version 5?
IPv5 was an experimental streaming protocol that was not involved with IP address space. See 6LoWPAN, IPv4 address exhaustion and IP address.

The Silver Spring network uses the IPv6 Internet addressing scheme and places a controller on every luminaire.
Service providers use 6rd to encapsulate IPv6 traffic in IPv4 headers and tunnel home users' IPv6 traffic through the IPv4 network to IPv6 Internet service to quickly offer end-to-end IPv6 services.
In order to reach the IPv6 internet an isolated lPv6 host or network must be able to use the existing IPv4 infrastructure to carry IPv6 packets.
Getting even basic connectivity to the IPv6 internet usually requires some form of IPv6-over-IPv4 tunneling, and the average user has no way to enable this.
Participating network operators and ISPs also need to commit that 1% of their subscribers will be enabled for IPv6 Internet accessibility.
During the event, the UNH-IOL used publically routable IPv6 addresses, allowing participants to connect to the global IPv6 Internet.

It has the ability to receive IPv6-in-HTTP-in-IPv4 traffic, extract IPv6 packets from received traffic, and forward them to IPv6 Internet.
