IS-41

(Interim Standard-41) The North American protocol for passing cellular subscriber information from one carrier to another. IS-41 allowed mobile travelers to roam across the country. Prior to IS-41, calling mobile phone users outside of their home territory meant knowing what area they were in at that moment and dialing a special number to reach them. IS-41 also supports short messages (see SMS).
