Iakimov, Vsevolod Petrovich
Born Aug. 12 (25), 1912, in Saratov. Soviet anthropologist. Doctor of biological sciences (1968); professor (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1946. Iakimov graduated from Moscow State University in 1937. From 1945 to 1958 he was a senior research worker at the Institute of Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad. He was director of the Anthropological Institute and Museum of Anthropology of Moscow State University from 1958 to 1979; he was also head of the anthropology subdepartment of the biology department at Moscow State University from 1976 to 1979. Iakimov’s principal works deal with human evolution, paleoanthropology, and the genesis of races. He was the first to present an anthropological and philosophical interpretation of australopithecines as the initial stage of anthropogenesis. He also studied Neanderthal man, with special attention to the “classic” types of Neanderthal. Iakimov has been awarded the Order of the Red Star and various medals.
