Iakushkin, Evgenii

    0.01 sec.
Iakushkin, Evgenii Ivanovich

Born Jan. 20 (Feb. 1), 1826, in Moscow; died Apr. 27 (May 10), 1905, in Yaroslavl. Russian jurist, ethnographer, and bibliographer. Son of I. D. Iakushkin.

E. I. Iakushkin was born into the nobility. In 1847 he graduated from the law faculty of Moscow University; thereafter he served in the Land Surveying Office and taught jurisprudence at the Land Surveying Institute. In 1859 he became head of the provincial board of state properties in Yaroslavl. After helping implement the Peasant Reform of 1861 in Yaroslavl Province, he became head of the provincial financial board; he held the position until 1884.

Iakushkin played an important role in collecting materials on the Decembrist uprising and publishing them both in Russia and abroad. In 1853 and again in 1855 and 1856 he went to Siberia and formed close acquaintances with many of the Decembrists. Upon his suggestion and insistence, I. I. Pushchin, N. V. Basargin, and M. I. Murav’ev-Apostol wrote their memoirs. Iakushkin was a secret correspondent for Poliarnaia zvezda. In the early 1860’s he was close to Land and Liberty (Zemlia i Volia). In 1858 and 1859 he published several articles on A. S. Pushkin in the journal Bibliograficheskie zapiski. Iakushkin based the articles on previously unknown materials.
