Iaron, Grigorii Markovich 

Born Feb. 13 (25), 1893, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 31, 1963, in Moscow. Soviet Russian operetta performer and director. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1940).

Iaron graduated from the drama school of the St. Petersburg Society of Literature and the Arts in 1912. He was associated with theaters in Kiev, Odessa, Moscow, and Petrograd. In 1927 he helped organize the Moscow Theater of Operetta, which he headed several times.

Iaron’s best roles included Kutaisov in Strel’nikov’s The Peasant Girl, Popandopulo in B. Aleksandrov’s Wedding in Malinovka, El’tsov in Blanter’s On the Shores of the Amur, Herman in Friml and Stothart’s Rose Marie, and Voliapiuk, Popules-cu, and Pelikan in Kálmán’s The Czardas Princess (Silva), Countess Maritza, and The Circus Princess, respectively. Iaron directed productions of Riabov’s Sorochintsy Fair (1937), Aleksandrov’s Wedding in Malinovka (1937), and Kálmán’s The Czardas Princess (Silva) (1940).
