Iarvet, Iuri Evgen’evich 

(Jüri Järvet). Born June 18, 1919, in Tallinn. Soviet Estonian actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1975).

Iarvet studied at the Estonian Theatrical Institute from 1945 to 1949. He began his career in the theater in the Estonian Art Ensemble in Yaroslavl in 1941 and performed on the variety stage. He became an actor at the Tallinn Drama Theater in 1952, and from 1965 to 1967 he acted at the Young People’s Theater. He began as a character actor in comedies, but in the mid-1960’s he revealed a gift for tragedy. Iarvet’s roles have included the Jester and Voitinskii in Tammsaare’s The King Is Cold and Man and God, Bal’zaminov in Ostrovskii’s The Marriage of BaTzaminov, Claudius in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and Poprishchin in the one-man show Notes of a Madman, based on the work by Gogol. He has appeared in the films The New Devil From the Netherworld (1965), The Dead Season (1968), King Lear (1971), and Solaris (1972).

Iarvet was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of Friendship of Peoples (1979), and several medals.
