Iaşi, University of
(full name, A. I. Cuza University of Iaşi), largest higher educational institution in Rumania, founded in the city of Iaşi in 1860. In the 1977–78 academic year, the University of Iaşi had eight faculties: physics, mathematics, biology and geography, history and philosophy, philology, economics, law, and pedagogy. It had an enrollment of 9,800 and a teaching staff of 668. Attached to the university are an astronomical observatory, a biological and geographical research center, and a museum of natural history.
