Ibagué

Ibagué (ēbägā`), city (1993 pop. 340,191), alt. 4,300 ft (1,311 m), capital of Tolima dept., W central Colombia. It is a major commercial center for the Magdalena and Cauca valleys. Coffee, flour, and sugar are produced in the city, and silver and sulfur are shipped. In 1854, Ibagué served briefly as the national capital. It grew rapidly as a result of the coffee boom in the 1890s. It is the site of Tolima Univ.

Ibagué

City (pop., 1999 est.: 393,664), central Colombia. It is located on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Central of the Andes Mountains. Founded in 1550 on the site of an Indian village, it was moved to its present location for protection from Indian attacks. It was the nation's capital briefly in 1854. Its location on a road linking the cities of Armenia and Bogotá has made it a busy commercial centre. It is the seat of Tolima University.


Ibagué 

a city on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Central in central Colombia; administrative center of Tolima Department. Population, 183,000 (1971). Highways and rail-roads connect the city with the airport in Girardot and with Bogota. Ibague is a trade center for an agricultural region which produces coffee, sugar, rice, and tobacco. Cattle are also bred in this region. There are food and tobacco industrial enterprises, and leather handicrafts are produced. Ibague is the site of a university.
