Ibn Ishaq, Abu Abdallah Muhammad
Born 704 in Medina; died 767 or 768 in Baghdad. Arab historian. Ibn Ishaq is the author of the earliest biography of Muhammad, which has come down to us in ibn Hisham’s (died in 833 or 834) recension, entitled the Book of the Life of the Messenger of Allah. Despite the many legends and spurious poetic citations, it remains a valuable source for the history of early Islam. WORKSDas Leben Muhammeds, nach Muhammed Ibn Ishak, vols. 1–2. Göttingen, 1858–60. (Arabic text.) Vols. 1–2. Translated from Arabic. Stuttgart, 1864.Want to thank TFD for its existence?
