Indications the shelf has become unstable follow the collapse three weeks ago of the ice bridge between the Antarctic mainland and Charcot Island.
An ice bridge which tethered the vast Wilkins Ice Shelf - which is about the size of Jamaica - to two other islands in Antarctica shattered, leaving hundreds of small icebergs in its place.
