Washington DC [USA], November 10 ( ANI ): A new study shows that global warming has reduced the mass of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet by half in as little as 500 years, indicating the Greenland Ice Sheet could face a similar fate.

To do this, NASA Earth is using instruments aboard aircraft, ships, sensors placed in the ocean, and spacecraft in Earth's orbit to collect the data of all of the variables affecting the Greenland ice sheet.
This loss of ice into the ocean would cause a global sea level rise of up to five metres if the ice sheet disappeared.
The ice sheet stockpiles enough water to raise sea levels by about 60 meters and reshape Earth's coastlines.
The water that drained from the lake to the base of the ice sheet lubricates the interface between ice and rock, allowing the ice sheet to slide faster toward the coast.
