Ichthyol

Ichthyol 

an anti-inflammatory, locally analgesic, and, to some extent, antiseptic agent; an ammonium salt of the sulfonic acids of shale oil.

Ichthyol is applied externally for skin conditions (burns, erysipelas, eczema); for neuralgia and arthritides, in the form ofointments or aqueous-alcoholic lotions; and for diseases of thepelvic organs (metritis, parametritis, salpingitis, prostatitis), inthe form of suppositories. Ichthyol ointment, ichthyol-naphtha-lane ointment, ichthyol-naphthalane paste, and ichthyol sup-positories are manufactured.
