Idrija

 

a city in Yugoslavia, in the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. Population, 6,000 (1967). Located on the Idrica River, in a mountainous region. Mercury has been mined in Idrija since the 15th century (it is now the site of one of the biggest mines in the world, accounting for approximately one-tenth of the total world mercury production).

Before Anglo-Mexican mining interests began to work the thick deposits in 1848, all mercury was imported from European mines at Idria in Austria (worked since the fifteenth century) and Almaden in Spain (in operation since Roman times).
However, on older, adjacent terraces, Larrea is dominant, Viguiera is absent, and regeneration of Idria columnaris (boojum) and Pachycerus pringli (cardone cactus) - the primary beneficiaries of Viguiera - are absent.
They include pans of Aylesford type, cups of Idria type, jugs of Gallarate type, situlae of Bargfeld type, etc.
