immunoglobulin M [‚im·yə·nō‚gläb·yə·lən ′em]
(immunology)
The first immunoglobulin class to appear during the primary immune response; it is mainly contained in the bloodstream, where it can readily neutralize agents attempting to gain entrance through the blood. Abbreviated IgM.
