Ignatov, Sergei Sergeevich
Born June 19 (July 1), 1887; died Mar. 7, 1959, in Moscow. Soviet theater and literary critic and teacher. Ignatov graduated from the history and philology department of Moscow University in 1913 and began his literary activity. From 1921 he taught the history of Western European literature and theater in the Moscow theaters and at the Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History and from 1934 at the A. V. Lunacharskii State Institute of Theatrical Art (a professor from 1939). He was the author of the fundamental work The History of the Modern Western European Theater ( 1940); he did research on the history of the theater of South Slavs and Western Slavs. WORKSE. T. A.
