The time of delivery of the spark from the coil to the spark plug in relation to the time the piston reaches the correct position for the power stroke in an internal combustion engine.

You'll actually want your points changed, or at least adjusted, every six months or so (if they're changed, check the ignition timing as well).
According to Edmondson, should a sudden spike in engine speed be detected, the powerful ECU will alter the ignition timing to reduce power to the rear wheel, presumably to stop it from spinning.
