Ignjatović, Jakov
Born Dec. 12, 1824, in Szentendre; died Aug. 4, 1889, in Novi Sad. Serbian writer. Son of a merchant. Took part in the Revolution of 1848. Ignjatovic depicted the struggle of the Serbs and Hungarians against the Turkish yoke in his historical novels and novellas Djuradj Brankovic (1859) and Manzor and Dzemila (1860), which were written in the romantic spirit. His novels Milan Narandiic (1860–63), Strange World (1869), Vasa Respekt (1875), The Eternal Suitor (1878), and The Sufferer (1888) heralded the transition to realism in Serbian literature.
