a river in The Netherlands. The IJssel, a right branch of the Rhine, originates near the city of Arnhem. It measures 123 km in length. The river empties into the IJsselmeer, the southern part of the Zuider Zee, after flowing through a plain in an embanked channel. The mean flow rate is approximately 280 cu m per sec, and the maximum flow rate is approximately 2,000 cu m per sec. In the winter the water level rises 4–7 m. The IJssel is navigable for its entire length. A network of canals connects it with the northern and eastern parts of the country. The cities of Deventer and Zwolle are located in the valley of the IJssel.
