Ille-Et-Vilaine 

a department of northwestern France, on the English Channel. Area, approximately 7,000 sq km; population, 672,000 (1971). Administrative center, Rennes. Ille-et-Vilaine is located in the basin of the Vilaine River and its tributary, the Ille. The primary economic sector is agriculture, with the main crops being wheat, sugar beets, and potatoes; horticulture is also practiced (apples and pears). Livestock (cattle, swine) is raised in the department. Industries in Ille-et-Vilaine include food, leather and footwear, and metalworking, located chiefly in Rennes. On the seacoast there is fishing and an oyster enterprise. Seaside climatic health resorts include St. Malo, Dinard, and Cancale. [10–391 -1]
