Ilhéus

Ilhéus (ēlyĕ`s), city (1991 pop. 223,750), Bahia state, E Brazil, a port on Ilhéus Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in the mid-16th cent., it became the world's chief cacao port during the early 20th cent. Ilhéus is still the cacao center of Brazil. It exports rubber, timber, chemicals, and piassava. A hydroelectric project is located north of Ilhéus.
Ilhéus 

a city in eastern Brazil, at the mouth of the Cachoeira River, in Bahia State. Population, 100,700 (1968). It is a seaport serving the area that produces more than 90 percent of Brazil’s cacao harvest. Goods shipped through Ilheus include cacao (which is shipped primarily on coastal vessels to the port of Salvador, from which it is exported), cacao-seed oil, and lumber.
