Il’iushin, Aleksei Antonovich 

Born Jan. 7 (20), 1911, in Kazan. Soviet scholar in continuum mechanics; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1943). Member of the CPSU since 1940. Graduated from Moscow University in 1934 and became a professor there in 1938. From 1936 to 1960 he worked at the Institute of Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (he became the director of the institute in 1953). He was rector of Leningrad University from 1950 to 1952. Il’iushin’s main works were on the theory of elasticity and plasticity. He developed the theory of viscoplastic flows (1934—40), the theory of small elastico-plastic deformations (1942—48), the theory of the stability of plates and shells beyond the elastic limit (State Prize of the USSR, 1948), the theory of simulation in processes of pressure working of metals (1951–52), and the theory of linear and nonlinear thermovisco-elasticity. Il’iushin also proposed a method of simulation during supersonic flow around a body, as well as solutions to a number of problems of gas dynamics. He was a deputy to the third and fourth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR. He has been awarded six orders, as well as several medals.
