Ilkeston (ĭl`kĕstən), town (1991 pop. 34,683), Derbyshire, central England. Iron and coal mines lie to the south. Rayon, lace, hosiery, and iron goods are manufactured. Ilkeston is mentioned in the Domesday Book Domesday Book , record of a general census of England made (1085–86) by order of William I (William the Conqueror). The survey ascertained the economic resources of most of the country for purposes of more accurate taxation.
