illuminated manuscriptHandwritten book decorated with gold or silver, brilliant colours, elaborate designs, or miniature paintings. “Illumination” originally denoted embellishment of text with gold or silver, which gave the impression that the page had been literally illuminated. In the Middle Ages those who “historiated” (illustrated texts with paintings) were differentiated from those who “illuminated” (embellished the initial capital letters with gold leaf or powder). Today the term denotes the illustration and decoration of early manuscripts in general, whether or not with gold. With the development of printing in Europe in the 15th century, illumination was superseded by printed illustrations. How to thank TFD for its existence? In the tradition of medieval illuminated manuscripts, Adam Rhine's Hebrew Illuminations is both a showcase collection of superb art and a volume of meditative inspiration for spiritual insight and reflection. To mark the 550th anniversary of Angelico's death, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art has brought together seventy-five of his paintings, drawings, and illuminated manuscripts. The images they formed turned out to be symbols associated with Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, of all people--leaves, snakes, and spirals that wrap themselves around the names of the band members, decorations that brought to mind the elaborate initials of illuminated manuscripts. |
