illuminating gas [ə′lü·mə‚nād·iŋ ‚gas]
(materials) Flammable mixture of gases suitable for illuminating purposes; contains hydrogen, methane, ethane, carbon monoxide, and some nitrogen and oxygen. Illuminating Gas a mixture of combustible gases, primarily methane and hydrogen, that is formed during the thermal processing of coal—for example, during such heat-producing processes as coking and low-temperature carbonization.
